On December 29, 2010, I left the comfort and familiarity of life in Melbourne and went exploring. Travelling solo for most of the next 10 months, I spent winter in the US, then spring in the UK. I started summer in Europe, finished it in North America, then rounded out my trip with autumn in France, Germany, and Italy. It was unforgettable (how could it be anything less?). I’m a sucker for numbers, so I kept some rough figures to document my travels:

  • Countries: 9
  • Cities / towns / villages: 42
  • Distance flown: 73,400 km
  • Flights: 30
  • Airlines: 9
  • Long-haul bus trips (>2 hours): 6
  • Ferries and boats: 8
  • Long-haul trains (> 2 hours): 9
  • Hostels: 20
  • “Couches” surfed: 13
  • Different currencies used: 6
  • Total days spent abroad: 302
